THE SIMPLIFYMBA METHOD

A framework label is the start of the investigation.

The SimplifyMBA Business Model Decoder turns company evidence into a causal explanation and a usable decision rule. It combines business-model anatomy, pattern hypotheses, link-level evidence, failure testing, and transfer constraints.

The five-stage method

Map the business

We document the customer, value proposition, channels, relationships, revenue streams, key resources, activities, partnerships, and cost structure. Each field needs a concrete claim and a source. The public article shows only the fields that explain the thesis.

Find the advantage

We select no more than three Business Model Navigator patterns as hypotheses. Each pattern needs supporting evidence, counterevidence, confidence, and a defined role. A familiar label never substitutes for company-specific reporting.

Prove cause and effect

The analysis becomes a three-to-seven-node causal map. Every directed link needs evidence, and the map must show how one condition changes another over time. The explanation must still work after every framework label is removed.

Find where it breaks

Every flagship analysis tests at least two failure paths. Each test identifies the weakened link, the mechanism of failure, supporting evidence or counterevidence, and an observable leading indicator.

Turn it into a decision

The analysis ends with one constrained operator rule. It states what action follows from the evidence, which conditions must be true, and what signal should stop the action. Generic advice does not pass.

WORKED EXAMPLE

ServiceNow: workflow context compounds expansion.

Each governed workflow leaves reusable operating context that lowers the cost of deploying the next workflow while raising the cost of replacing the installed platform.

Workflow records → shared operating context → reusable rules and integrations → more critical processes → higher migration cost → renewal and expansion time → more workflow records

Pattern hypotheses

Layer Player explains ServiceNow's position across systems owned by other vendors. Subscription explains recurring value capture, not adoption or product quality. Lock-In explains accumulated replacement cost, with pricing and implementation quality as real boundaries.

Failure tests

Watch implementation effort, employee workarounds, permission breaches, unrecoverable errors, and audit gaps. These signals show where the claimed advantage can weaken or reverse.

Operator rule

A workflow platform earns expansion when each completed process leaves reusable records, policies, integrations, or decisions that lower the cost of the next deployment. Added licenses without better cycle time, control, or reuse indicate software accumulation instead of a compounding advantage.

What counts as evidence

Primary sources first: filings, earnings releases, investor material, product documentation, and official technical material.

Evidence near the claim: important numbers and causal links carry a nearby source.

Reporting windows: historical analysis uses only information available by the stated cutoff.

Counterevidence: every pattern and major mechanism is tested against a real boundary.

Original synthesis: SimplifyMBA uses original language, diagrams, and analysis. It does not reproduce book diagrams or pattern-card text.

The method draws on the Business Model Canvas from Alexander Osterwalder and Yves Pigneur, and the pattern library associated with Oliver Gassmann, Karolin Frankenberger, and Michaela Csik. SimplifyMBA adds evidence requirements, causal analysis, stress tests, and an operator decision rule. The frameworks organize the reporting; they are never used as proof.
